Steampunk Butterfly
Melanie Poole of Montevallo and her sister, Denise Poole-Cahela, are the duo behind Steampunk Butterfly. Melanie’s day job is in the nonprofit sector, and making Steampunk accessories serves as a creative outlet, allowing her to relax and step into a fantasy cosplay world. Denise, a retired physician, first began making jewelry as a way to rehabilitate her hand muscles following a spinal cord injury after a fall. Creating hats and lamps became a natural extension of her desire to repurpose discarded materials into useful and functional pieces. Using vintage watch parts, recycled metals, handmade textiles, and other materials, they create lamps, jewelry, and hats inspired by Victorian-era aesthetics and retro-futuristic Steampunk technology. As artists, they are drawn to Steampunk for its appreciation of reclaiming the old and making it new again, cherishing the long-lasting and well-made. Steampunk revels in history, wearing it on the outside—and they share that passion.
