Ken Keel

Based in Fort Payne, Alabama, Kenny Keel is an artist whose creative journey reflects a lifetime of craftsmanship, discipline, and rediscovery. He first developed his artistic foundation while studying Art and Design at the University of Alabama and Jacksonville State University. During his studies, he explored photography, oil painting, drawing, art history, and mixed media, developing a strong understanding of form, value, and perspective—principles that continue to shape his work today. While in college, Keel completed a life-size self-portrait that remained on display in Martin Hall at Jacksonville State University for many years, marking an early milestone in his artistic development.
Outside the studio, Keel built a 39-year career as a union pipefitter and welder, providing stability for his family while contributing to projects across the country. Among his most notable experiences was working with NASA on a launch pad project at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, along with numerous power plant projects throughout the United States. The precision, structure, and physicality of this work continue to influence the way he approaches materials, form, and construction in his art.
Keel’s artistic spark was first ignited in high school through lessons with artist Janie Ross, whom he credits with inspiring his lifelong appreciation for creative expression. After decades devoted to his trade while raising his daughter, Bailey, he rediscovered his passion for art while building custom chopper motorcycles. The creative process reignited his desire to draw, paint, and sculpt. What began as personal pieces for family and close friends soon revealed a compelling artistic voice. Encouraged by those around him, Keel now continues to pursue art with renewed freedom, creating work that reflects both the technical skill of a lifelong craftsman and the spirit of an artist reconnecting with his passion.
